The name of the street comes from the Italian word “rastrello” which means “a rake-shaped gate”. In medieval times its closure separated the Castle town from the surrounding countryside. For many centuries Via Rastello was the main commercial street of Gorizia/Gorica. Although a lot has changed in the last decades, some shops, taverns and workshops still preserve their original shop windows.
