The natural karst cave, Valska jama (Jerihovca) Cave is located in the vicinity of the hamlet of Vale, in the Municipality of Komen. The approximately 210 metres long cave served as a shelter and a military field hospital (Lazarett or Feldspital) for the Austro-Hungarian soldiers during the Isonzo Front. The cave could receive around 1,500 soldiers.
You descend into the cave down a set of stone steps. In it you can still see the concrete foundations for wooden shacks with bunk beds and storage space. The cave becomes narrower towards the end. In the last area you can still see the preserved concrete water troughs and a drainage canal. Of interest is also the abbreviation SLF or SLP on one of the speleothems, the meaning of which is still unknown. The cave had electricity, and you can still see the iron brackets for the electric wiring. The electricity was produced with a petrol generator located in a cave near the caves entrance. The cave also had potable water from the nearby aqueduct.
Coming from the direction of Gorjansko, head left onto a dirt road by the Vale village sign. Take the next left and at the next two crossroads, right.
