The Celtic Hypogeum is a system of artificial underground caves and tunnels, dug in the rock below Cividale del Friuli/Čedad. Although the whole is very mysterious, it looks like some sort of a natural cave on the right bank of the Natisone/Nadiža River which must have been transformed into the Celtic Hypogeum. The maskarons, carved into the stone, and the niches suggest Celtic funerary art. Afterwards, the Romans probably used this place as a prison.
