Austro-Hungarian Graves in the Cemetery Pontafel

The municipality of Pontebba has quite an interesting historical story to tell. The Rio Pontebbana river constituted the border between the Austro-Hungarian part, Pontafel, and the Italian part, Pontebba. After signing the peace treaties, the border was moved north of Tarvisio/Trbiž/Tarvis. There are still two cemeteries, one on each side of the river. In St. Anthony’s civil cemetery in Pontafel there are 21 headstones with metal plaques marking the graves of known and unknown Austro-Hungarian soldiers, who mainly lost their lives in the summer of 1915.
