The monastery of Santa Maria in Valle probably had its origins within the Roman town of Cividale del Friuli/Čedad. In the Lombard age, it was the seat of the royal court and the residence of the chamberlain. The oratory of Santa Maria in Valle, also known as the Lombard Temple, boasts some 8th century architecture and art. Built as a Palatine chapel of the royal court, it later became the oratory for the nuns and served this purpose until the end of the 19th century, when it was donated to the Municipality. The Temple is the best known example of the Lombard architecture and art in Italy.
