There are two cemeteries in Lipa and buried in both are Hungarian soldiers from the 46th and 39th Infantry regiments (IR 46 and IR 39). The recruitment area of the 46th Infantry Regiment was in the surroundings of Szeged, and of the 39th Infantry Regiment in the surroundings of Debrecen. In the Lipa II military cemetery (in the register of the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of Slovenia named as Lipa na Krasu II) lie also the soldiers of the 43rd Infantry Regiment from the recruitment area in Karánsebes (known today as Caransebeș) in Romania. 238 Austro-Hungarian soldiers are buried in Lipa II and 887 Austro-Hungarian soldiers are buried in Lipa I (in the register of the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of Slovenia named as Lipa na Krasu I). Some of the buried died in the war hospital in Lipa.

Access and useful info

Access

Military cemeteries Lipa I & II lie at the northeastern fringe of Lipa. The easiest access to the cemeteries is to go from Opatje selo towards Kostanjevica na Krasu and further on towards Temnica and towards Lipa. At the church of St. Michael, follow the signposts for military cemeteries to which a minor cart track runs. After a good 200 metres you turn left from the main cart track and after a good 100 metres you reach the two cemeteries.
