Soldiers on the Isonzo Front systematically searched for and arranged safe shelters. They also found them in natural karst caves which were efficiently used for temporary accommodation and storage of ammunition and food. The Unit for Caving Construction of the Austro-Hungarian Army explored and adapted many caves on karst plateaus. Due to its excellent natural ventilation and multi-level division the cave was given the unusual name of Klobasja jama Cave/Wursthöhle (Sausage Cave). The soldiers installed multi-storey bunk beds in terraces and arranged the ventilation system and sanitary facilities. The cave could provide shelter for about 250 soldiers and the command of an infantry brigade.
