Battery Amalfi

The military structure, included in the coastal defence system of Venice and its littoral areas, initiated by Admiral Paolo Thaon di Revel at the beginning of World War I, was dedicated to the memory of the sailors who lost their lives on the Italian Navy cruiser Amalfi, sunk in the northern Adriatic Sea on 7 July 1915 by a German submarine. Prior to this, the idea of including huge armoured naval-type turrets in a battery had only been put into practice by the USA in Fort Drum, meant to protect Manila. After the Caporetto Retreat (in Austro-Hungarian literature known as the Miracle of Kobarid), the Amalfi Battery kept control over the bridges across the Piave River and succeeded in blowing up the San Donà bridge before the Austro-Hungarian Army managed to cross it. Later on, the battery was ready to intervene in the Battle of the Solstice in June 1918. With the support of the Veneto Region, the construction was recently made safe and accessible, and its natural context has thus become a sort of historical-cultural park.
