The top of the hill Pečina (Hill 308) was used as an observation point by both belligerent armies, first by the Austro-Hungarian and later by the Italian side. The Austro-Hungarian Army had a searchlight installed on its top, which the soldiers could hoist on special rails and after the task was over, they could quickly return it back to the safe shelter under the earth. The powerful beam of light was very disturbing for the Italians, since it did not allow their free movement even at night. The top of Pečina was conquered by the Italians on 1 November 1916 in the Ninth Isonzo Offensive, after which they adapted the observation post to their needs. Because of its strategic location, the hill was named the “Eye of the Kras”. The observers communicated the obtained information to the command of the 21st Artillery Division which was lodged in the lower-lying cave and to the command of the infantry division that was responsible for this sector.
