Mt. Piccolo Jôf di Miezegnot/Mala Poldašnja špica/Kleiner Mittagskofel and the Val Saisera/Dolina Zajzere Valley belonged to Austria-Hungary until the end of World War I. The Val Saisera is a side connection between the Val Dogna Valley and the Val Canale/Kanalska dolina Valley and as such it represented a critical area from where either army, the Italian and the Austro-Hungarian, could invade the enemy’s territory. The valley was teeming with military infrastructure. Mt. Piccolo Jôf di Miezegnot was conquered by Austro-Hungarian soldiers in the summer of 1915, whereas fierce combats took place here between 16 and 18 July 1916, when the Italians tried to conquer this mountain, but to no avail. As a reminder of these events, a memorial plaque was installed on the top of Piccolo Jôf di Miezegnot.
Easier access is possible from Valbruna/Ovčja vas/Wolfsbach. The trail starts not far from the Austro-Hungarian cemetery, where the signposts for CAI 607 are to be followed. After 800-metre height difference, the Rauna mountain pasture is reached. Not far from here stands the chapel Zita, built in 1917 by the Austro-Hungarian soldiers and dedicated to Emperor Charles I’s wife. The path continues past the remains of shelters and caves. Installed on the top is a memorial plaque commemorating the battles of July 1916.
Access to Piccolo Jôf di Miezegnot/Mala Poldašnja špica/Kleiner Mittagskofel is also possible from Jôf di Miezegnot/Poldašnja špica/Großer Mittagskofel, but this route is only recommended to the experienced mountaineers.
