During World War I, Mt. Krn was one of the most important fortified mountains in the Soča Region. As the highest peak in the massif, it was a very good observation and strategic point. The neighbouring Mt. Batognica was likewise one of the bloodiest mountains. The first front lines of the two armies were only by a few tens of metres apart here. In 1917, a war of mines was waged in this area, which ended on 24 October with the Austro-Hungarian blasting of Italian positions, the conquest of the mountain and the breakthrough towards Kobarid. On the top of Mt. Batognica, craters can still be seen that were made by powerful explosions. On the west ridge of the mountain a set of stone steps is well preserved as well as an Italian memorial tablet inscribed in Latin.
