Thanks to its strategic position, the pass of Mt. Croce Carnico/Plöckenpass in Carnia has been considered a favourable geographical crossing point between Austria and Friuli plains since the Roman times. The peaks around the pass played an important strategic role also during World War I, with Pal Piccolo/Kleiner Pal being one of them. It is arranged today as an outdoor museum and displays numerous remains of this dark era of human history when this beautiful landscape turned into a war arena. The trenches show how close the positions of the two adversaries were and certainly make a visitor think about the fact how fierce the battles must have been.
From Italy: From Tolmezzo use the road SS52bis towards Timau and further towards the border with Austria on Passo Croce Carnico/Plöckenpass. After passing Timau, follow the road for ten kilometres until you reach the pass.
From Austria: Take Plöckenpass Strasse (B110) from the village of Kötschach-Mauthen/Koče-Muta and follow the road to the Plöckenpass/Passo Croce Carnico for twelve kilometres.
