The big dome enables the Ossuary Temple in Udine to be seen from afar. The four statues on the façade of the building represent an alpino, an infantryman, an aviator and a sailor. The building is divided into the parish church of St. Nicholas and the ossuary, where 21,500 soldiers who died in Friuli Venezia Giulia during World War I are buried. Their mortal remains were transferred to the ossuary from several cemeteries scattered between the rivers Isonzo (Soča) and Tagliamento. The remains of the soldiers are interred in a massive crypt under the church. Two large collective tombs hold remains of 5,600 unidentified soldiers, while the identified rest in the niches along the wall. A bronze sculpture in the crypt is dedicated to the fallen soldiers of the Julia and Friuli Divisions. Also 300 soldiers who died during World War II are buried here.
